ORWELL, Vt. (WCAX) - Six Vermont historic sites are offering free admission this weekend as part of Vermont Days.

That includes Mount Independence, overlooking Lake Champlain and parts of Fort Ticonderoga.

More is planned at the site later in July, celebrating when the Declaration of Independence was read 250 years ago.

Site leaders say now is an important time to check out the state’s history, but also hope people come to enjoy the trails and sights.

“We have an amazing array of artifacts here. We have some wonderful trails and beautiful views. And even if you don’t like history, you can come here, you can spend the day walking around. If you learn history by accident, it’s even better,” said Paul Andriscin, Mount Independence site interpreter.

The sites are open and free through Sunday.
